Challenge
Respecting the building’s history.
Kandi was entrusted with the task of crafting the Cape Town restaurant branding, a brand name, logo, and visual identity that pays tribute to the rich history of the hotel building and the surrounding locality. Moreover, the outcome of this project had to remain in alignment with Onomo’s brand values, ensuring a cohesive and authentic representation of their brand.

Discovery
A name honouring the building.
The Onomo Hotel is located in the heart of Cape Town, specifically at the historic Greenmarket Square. The building is a 1929 Art Deco-style building which is well-known for the clock on its facade. When brainstorming names for the restaurant, it was important to pay homage to the rich heritage of the area and the building. More than 200 name suggestions were considered, and after shortlisting 14, the name “Klok” was identified as a firm favourite. This name, which means “clock” in Afrikaans (the most widely spoken language in Cape Town), was deemed appropriate since it also works well in English, catering to the diverse range of guests that the hotel accommodates, including business travellers, overseas tourists, as well as locals.

Identity
A touch of Art Deco.
In designing the logo and visual identity for the restaurant, the Art Deco period was taken as inspiration, paying homage to the building’s historical significance. The logo mark was reimagined as an oval device, offering the flexibility to incorporate images or serve as a background shape. In addition, Kandi created custom menus, coasters, and placemats for the restaurant’s grand opening.
