Challenge

Understanding the African landscape.

Kiya is a spirited 7-year-old girl who loves ballet and martial arts. When her community needs protecting, she and her friends use magical crystal headbands to transform into superheroes, defending their neighbourhood and restoring joy and harmony.

Kandi was approached for their expertise in African branding and distinct design sensibility. The challenge lay in navigating diverse cultural references across the continent while avoiding stereotypes. This required a nuanced understanding of both the African and global commercial landscape to create a logo that resonates authentically in Africa while commanding attention on the global stage.

Collaboration

Two design teams, one objective.

Kandi worked in close collaboration with the eOne team to conceptualise multiple logo directions for the series. Each concept needed to capture the show’s unique blend of African culture, superhero action, and childhood wonder while resonating with a global audience of young viewers. Various creative options were explored, focusing on reflecting Kiya’s dynamic personality and dual passions, while keeping the visual identity fun, empowering, and accessible to children worldwide. The concepts balanced the show’s vibrant African setting with the bold, energetic aesthetic that appeals to young superhero fans.

Bespoke typography

Hand crafted with an African influence.

The project called for a typeface that truly embodied the African essence of the story, moving beyond the dominance of Western-centric type design. We created bespoke letterforms for the logo, using texture, pattern, colour, and shape to define a distinctly modern African aesthetic rooted in the spirit of Kiya. Conceptually, we drew inspiration from the geometric jewels featured in the heroes’ headbands and channelled the series’ dynamic energy by blending references of martial arts and Kiya’s love of dance through pattern and movement. The result was a set of logo concepts that felt authentic, expressive, and unique.
