Each year the SA Innovation Summit creates a platform for innovators and creators to share their experiences and to be inspired by their peers. K&i was approached in 2011 to help inject the years campaign branding with the same kind of innovative approach that the event represented. Even though marketed mainly to corporates, the approach needed to be more creative and innovative to align to the conferences values.
The concept for the event branding followed the year’s theme ‘Innovation Legends – Ideas to Market’. A set of icons and characters, along with a custom handmade typeface was developed, cut out of paper. The branding was used across various touchpoints, such as print and digital adverts, postcard, e-newsletters, e-mail signatures and the conference handbook.
The 204-page conference handbook (sponsored by FNB), The Black Book, was created not only as a summit handbook but also served as an extended directory featuring some of the leading innovators from around the world. The Black Book included information from the summit’s speakers, varying notes pages and creative concepts to stimulate imagination, encourage new idea thinking, and to promote interaction and exploration.
In 2012 the Black Book was honoured as a Loeries finalist in the publication category and has been featured on various blogs and websites, including Creative Review, Status Magazine, Lost at E Minor, Design is a good idea, Between 10 and 5, and African Digital Art.
